🏘️ YIMBY Hampton Roads Launches "Fight for 50k" Campaign to Tackle Housing Shortage🏘️

In response to the pressing housing crisis in the region, YIMBY Hampton Roads has launched its "Fight for 50k" campaign. This grassroots initiative aims to address the region's housing shortage, estimated to be around 50,000 homes, which has led to escalating costs for both buyers and renters.

The campaign, announced at last Tuesday’s Norfolk City Council meeting, seeks to engage local officials, planners, and community leaders to advocate for policy reforms that will increase the housing supply and make housing more affordable.

"Hampton Roads is one of the most cost-burdened places for housing in the United States," said Grayson Orsini, a Lead with YIMBY Hampton Roads. "This means people are spending a disproportionate amount of their income on housing, which has far-reaching consequences for our region."

🖼️‘Early Days’ Explores Indigenous Art in New Exhibition 🖼️

The Chrysler Museum of Art has unveiled Early Days: Indigenous Art from the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, a landmark exhibition showcasing the diversity and vitality of Indigenous art in Canada. Running from May 24th to September 1st, 2024, this internationally renowned exhibit is the first comprehensive survey of Canadian Indigenous art to be presented outside of Canada.

Organized in collaboration with Indigenous scholars, knowledge keepers, and artists, Early Days features a stunning array of 111 objects spanning from 18th-century ceremonial regalia to contemporary works by leading Indigenous artists. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to experience the richness and complexity of Indigenous artistic traditions through beadwork garments, ceremonial masks, stone carvings, and much more.

🍃Landmark Rising in Five Points Park: A Grass Dome Illuminates Norfolk 🍃

This July, Five Points Park will welcome a striking new addition to its landscape: Grass Dome, a 22-foot illuminated sculpture designed to serve as a beacon of creativity and community gathering. This immersive artwork, conceived by Engineered Artworks, will transform the park's southeast entrance into a captivating gateway.

Inspired by Nature and Urban Form
Grass Dome, true to its name, draws inspiration from the natural world and the unique urban environment of Five Points. Its design echoes the shape and hue of local grasses, while also mirroring the nearby circular intersection. The sculpture's open canopy, formed by simulated grass blades, will arch over the pathway, inviting visitors to step inside and experience a moment of quiet contemplation.
