It’s Wednesday! 🤙
You’re halfway through the week, let’s get after it!
🌬Today’s Weather:High of 52 & Gusty. Better batten down the hatches.
Here’s what we’re watching today:
🚧 Another delay for Headwaters Resort & Casino
The Architectural Review Board was scheduled to take up the HeadWaters Resort and Casino plans at the Monday meeting. Yet, the applicant delayed until the next meeting, on January 22nd.
What’s the official story? The developer has not disclosed what issues came up, but plans for the casino have changed several times since voter approved its construction in 2020.
Driving the story:
Plans were recently scaled down and then again
The project was initially complicated by flood wall considerations, though it no longer seeks to have a marina.
Portsmouth’s Rivers Casino is already open and poses new competition
What else to know:
🦪 2023’s oyster harvest yielded the most in 35 years
The waterways around Norfolk have reached a new milestone in recovery.
Close to the brink:
In the ‘80s and ‘90s, Oyster populations were dangerously close to collapse with seasons yielding fewer than 20,000 bushels.
According to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, the 2022-23 season saw 700,00 bushels gathered, which marks the most in 35 years.

Why it matters:
Oysters filter and remove nutrients from the water, which has been a driving force in restoring the Elizabeth and Lafayette rivers.
The seafood industry accounts for $1.1 billion in economic impact in Virginia
Who’s crushing leading the charge:
The Elizabeth River Project and partners have built 24 acres of new oyster reefs since 2014.
