🏁 The Starting Gun Fires🏁

This election year is shaping up to be considerably more competitive than in years past. In 2020, the last Mayor / Superward year Kenny Alexander, Andria McClellan, and Angelia Williams Graves all ran unopposed.

News Dropped
Andria McClellan announced yesterday that she won’t be running for re-election. This means superward six won’t have an incumbent. We’re not aware of any candidates running at this time, but we feel that it’s likely to be sharply contested.  (If you’re thinking about running, drop us an email).

Citywide
Meanwhile, in the race for the Mayor’s seat, it looks like Kenny Alexander will have an opponent this year (assuming he doesn’t drop out as well). Tommy Leeman, a partner at a wealth management firm and DNC Board Member, has started making posts brandishing a “Tommy Leeman for Mayor” pin. That campaign’s barely launched.

There’s no news of a challenger to Danica Royster, currently representing superward 7, but it’s still early in the cycle.

The Stakes
With projects like the casino, Military Circle, MacArthur Mall, and more coming down the pipe, the consequences of the elections could be generational.

Pay attention to your candidates early and often. Tell them your priorities. Vote. And maybe even run yourself.

🎹 đŸ‡«đŸ‡· Local Artists Make Competitive Residency in France

Hank the Aquarian and partner Tuff Cretin are a pair of local artists living in the Ocean View area of town. They’re colorful and eye-catching art works have been on the scene for a few years now. You’ve probably come across them at events like Norfolk Zine Fest, Yes Fest, and plenty more.

You might recognize some of their works like “Stabby Ghost” (big hit at Zine Fest) and “Easy Shrine” (which you probably saw at Reaver Beach). Hank’s devil motif is also pretty hard to miss.

Self-taught and scrappy they’ve made their name to some bigger stages. Hank the Aquarian was featured in a group exhibition at VA MOCA in 2023 and Tuff Cretin is soon to have a spot on the walls at Chrysler Museum. And now they’ve made it international.

Hank and Tuff have been accepted into a two-week residency at the competitive ChĂąteau d'Orquevaux. They were selected from a pool of hundreds of artists to take part in a two week residency at the 1700’s ChĂąteau in northeast France. They’ll embark on two-weeks of uninterrupted studio time and collaboration with artists from across the globe.

Then they’re bringing all that extra creative training and new energy back to the local scene. Speaking of, they credit the community with a large part of their earning the opportunity.

Gotta love seeing NFK’s reach across the world.

 Double Trouble
Spring is definitely event season in Norfolk, but nobody tell that to Smartmouth and TIARA. They’re kicking it off early with some major creative energy.

Lunch Lady Land
Close your eyes and picture it — the sights and smells of the bustling cafeteria space you knew so well in your formative years. Unmistakable scents wafting from the kitchen, cliques chattering, & questionable lunch ladies ready to plop sloppy joes or square pizza slices onto your tray.

An Evening of Future Funk with TIARA Tastemaker
For the uninitiated, Future Funk is a vibrant electronic music genre built on eclectic samples of 1970s-80s Japanese disco and funk. The sound draws heavily from an aesthetic world of bubblegum anime graphics, roller skating soul, and the optimistic technological fantasies of the 80s.
