Meet Church Street’s Industrial Cottage

Say Hello to the Industrial Cottage

Picture yourself walking around a shop with exposed brick, metal door frames, massive ceiling heights, tons of natural light from oversized windows, and to-die-for wall-to-wall home decor? Where did you see yourself? In a little Soho shop? A big warehouse-turned-design studio in Brooklyn?

If you picture a New York City warehouse transformed into a beautiful shop, then you are close yet so far. The shop we are describing isn’t in NYC; it’s right here in the heart of Hampton Roads. Located off Church Street and right on the edge of Ghent sits the Industrial Cottage. Don’t let the term “cottage” fool you as this is no small space we are talking about; it’s much more!

Their Story

The Industrial Cottage is coming up on its third year of doing business on the corner of East 25th and Church streets. It has been a labor of love for the owner, Molly, and her family–many of whom also work within the business. Though the current location is nearing its third birthday, the initial idea and original store began in 2005 as a high-end baby bedding manufacturer. Pivoting in 2007, Molly and her family came back to Virginia Beach and eventually found their love for the furniture business in which they’re flourishing.

The What?

The cottage makes full use of an 8,000 square foot shop with new and repurposed furniture and home designs of various types. From bedding to antique mirrors, repurposed dressers, chairs, and more, the Industrial Cottage has a whole slew of items from which to pick.

The shop consists of perfectly staged home designs featuring new furniture curated for the store by the team. They also have finished and repurposed pieces ready to be re-loved, along with unfinished pieces just waiting for the right vision to come along.

Custom Work

Speaking of that vision, the Industrial Cottage loves to work with their clientele on custom work. Customers can choose their unfinished piece knowing that the price includes customization. They offer both hand-painted and lacquer options for painting an item, with a few additional upgrade options. From there, customers choose the type of finish they’d prefer in addition to hardware options. After the modifications are to the customer’s vision, the work can be picked up, shipped, or even delivered.

Currently, they are also accepting inquiries regarding outside custom furniture work. For more details on this process and to fill out a form, click here

More Than a Store

From in-store private styling sessions and digital mood boards to custom design packages, they do it all. Their design packages vary but include digital inspiration, renderings, product recommendations, and more. They genuinely tailor these services to help their customers achieve the design of their dreams while giving them access to all of their expertise.

One thing that sets them apart from other designers is their flat-rate pricing model, which helps customers budget ahead of time without unexpected charges at the end of the project.

The Industrial Cottage doesn’t stop there with the services they offer. They even host free paint classes every first Saturday of the month from 11:30 am-12:30 pm. These classes are with the owner, Molly, and require no advanced registration. She’ll walk you through the basics of tackling a DIY project while you learn about the type of paint they use and recommend in-store. Additionally, they offer private painting classes for small groups at $75 per person. More details about both the free painting classes and the private classes can are available here

Finally, it’s worth noting that they have a program for interior designers called “To the Trade.” Members receive special discounts and various other perks as a part of the program.
