026: From Navy to Grapes – How The Witts Risked It All To Bring Craft Wines To Norfolk With Water’s Edge Winery
Dyan and Jason Witt give listeners a taste of their new winery and bistro, Water’s Edge, located in near Larchmont in Norfolk. The dynamic duo opened the locally-sourced craft winery after Jason’s retirement from a 20-year Navy career.
The Witts explained how Water’s Edge brings in grape juice from vineyards around the world, like Germany, France, and Argentina. Jason then ferments, filters, bottles, and labels the wine on-site to create a globally sourced, locally crafted product. They built an extensive kitchen to complement the wine with delicious starters, entrees, and weekend brunch.
Community is central to the Water’s Edge mission. The Witts chose Norfolk as their forever home after years of military moves. They want guests to feel like family in the tasting room’s relaxed vibe where kids and dogs are welcome. A wide range of events, from flower arranging to yoga, bring locals together.
According to Dyan, the Witts took a chance opening Water’s Edge to share their passion for wine and hospitality. The podcast gives listeners a taste of how this enterprising couple is reinventing the winery experience with a focus on quality, accessibility, and community.
