023: LAVA Presents: The Local Music Promoter Building the Indie Scene

The music scene in Hampton Roads is alive and well thanks to promoters like Josh Coplon of Lava Presents. In a recent interview on the Norfolk Currents podcast, Coplon discussed his passion for live music and mission to energize the local scene.

Coplon started booking shows back in high school out of a desire to provide more all-ages concerts for the community. Now, 16 years later, he continues to strive to make shows accessible to people of all ages. Through Lava Presents, Coplon works tirelessly to bring fresh, exciting musical acts to the area, from small local bands to well-known touring acts.

Some of Lava’s signature events include the Lava Mini Fest, a biannual seven hour event featuring continuous live music, and the creative Lava Halloween Extravaganza, where local artists form special one-off cover bands. Coplon shared lively anecdotes about wild stage antics from bands like Of Montreal and Dan Deacon, illustrating his enthusiasm for connecting audiences with meaningful live experiences.

Looking ahead, Coplon aims to expand Lava’s reach and impact. He discussed the need to energize the local college scene, get more student musicians involved, and attract diverse new audiences. Though he currently runs Lava as a one-man operation, Coplon plans to bring on more team members to increase productivity.

It’s clear from hearing Coplon speak that his dedication to music promotion runs deep. Lava Presents has become a beloved community institution, but he remains focused on growth and evolution. His tireless passion provides the foundation for Lava’s unique events that bring joy and connection through creative musical expression. Hampton Roads is fortunate to have advocates like Josh Coplon contributing their energy to keep the local music scene vibrant.
