No Excuse Not To Bike
Norfolk, get ready to pedal into May because Bike Month is rolling in! This isn't just about two wheels and a chain – it's about embracing a healthier, greener, and more connected city.
Here's why you should jump on the saddle:
Your Body Will Thank You:
Biking is a fantastic workout, burning calories, building muscle, and boosting your heart health. Studies show that cycling just 20 minutes a day can half your chance of dying from a heart-related disease. Live long and prosper cyclists!
Save Some Cash:
Ditch the gas pump! With rising fuel costs, biking saves you money on transportation. According to AAA, the average cost for an American driver to own and operate a car was about $8,558 in 2016. In comparison, some estimates put the average cost of owning and operating a bicycle at $350 a year. Get that paper, pedal pusher!
Breathe Easier:
Trade car exhaust for fresh air. Biking helps reduce air pollution, making Norfolk a cleaner place. According to research from the University of Oxford, choosing a bike over a car just once a day can reduce the average person’s transportation-related emissions by 67%. Looking like superman on that bike when you save the planet!
Explore Norfolk Your Way:
Discover hidden gems and see familiar sights from a new perspective on our growing network of bike lanes. Studies show that biking and walking friendly areas have improved social capital, more community activism, and increased local shopping. Bike for a better City, champ!
Join the Movement:
Norfolk is getting more bike-friendly! Be part of the positive change that makes our streets accessible for everyone. Biking in the U.S. is up 37 percent since 2019. Don’t be late to the party!
So, pump those tires, grab your helmet, and celebrate Bike Month in Norfolk. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a first-timer, there's something for everyone!

The Perry Pavillion’s fourth season opens today (May 1st)
That cool, grassy spot on Bank Street is once again transforming into The Perry Pavilion, and the vibes are 👌 You didn’t know you needed another spot to chill with a drink and catch intimate shows, but you’ve got it now. This year's mix of artists is the perfect cure for FOMO – we're talking country queens, indie darlings, and an epic family jam sesh.
The Lineup:
Trailblazing Women of Country (May 1st): Old-school country with a badass, modern twist. If you loved Allison Russell's show a couple of years back, this one's for you. Get ready for Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly vibes!
Brandy Clark (May 7th): The Grammy-winning singer/songwriter behind your fave country hits. Expect real talk, heart-wrenching songs, and some next-level Americana feels.
Mipso (May 28th): Defying genres like a boss. String band? Folk? Alt? Doesn't matter – just trust that these UNC alums will blow you away.
Storm Large (May 31st): If you like big voices and even bigger personalities, buckle up. Think HBO comedy special meets powerhouse diva. Covers from every genre? Check.
Aoife O'Donovan (June 1st): This Grammy winner's Norfolk comeback is a whole event. Expect folky feels, innovative musicians, and major local talent.
Bonny Light Horseman (June 11th): Loved 'Hadestown'? Here's your chance to catch one of its creators (+ some other indie royalty) in their smallest venue yet. Expect next-level harmonies and chill vibes.
Rhythm Project (May 25th): Get the whole fam dancing to world beats! This local student group is AMAZING, and it's the perfect feel-good show to kick off the season.
The Deets:
You know the drill – snag your tickets ASAP at vafest.org, by phone, or in person. This intimate venue means shows WILL sell out.
Pro Tip: Norfolk's got some seriously good eats. Hit up a restaurant before the show for the ultimate date night/friend hangout.
