Judging the Ginger at the Hermitage: Norfolk’s Finest Bakers Bring Their Skills to Edible Architecture

Upon entering the Hermitage Museum, you’ll experience the delightful smell of gingerbread cookies that harkens back to the Christmas mornings of youth. The Hermitage has been decked out with holiday cheer as they make their way through an exciting calendar of December events. Their main gallery displays a small collection of gingerbread homes built by crafty local bakers; how fitting for a building as cozy-looking as the Hermitage. They’re competing to win the 2nd annual gingerbread house contest at Hermitage. Last year’s submissions included creative works from mermaid houses to miniature baked replicas of the museum.

There are many creative submissions from carousels to traditional German architecture this year. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for your gingerbread home construction or want to enjoy the fruits of creation without setting foot in your kitchen, you’re going to enjoy the Hermitage this time of year.

Of course, the gingerbread houses aren’t the only attraction. The Sloane collection at the Hermitage has thousands of fine and decorative art pieces spanning over five millennia of art history. Sculptures, paintings, textiles, and more artifacts stand ready to take in.

So in between dashing out to grab more stocking stuffers and heading to Carol’s house to carol with no care, stop by the Hermitage Museum and Gardens for a sweet exhibition. Don’t forget to thank the elves as well because admission is FREE.
